About Sir Henry Cooper
Sir Henry Cooper (3 May 1934 – 1 May 2011) was born in London and became one of the best-loved sportsmen in British history. After representing Great Britain at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics, he turned professional in 1954. Over a 17-year career he won 40 of his 55 fights, 27 by knockout. His famous left hook, "'Enry's 'Ammer", put a young Cassius Clay (later Muhammad Ali) on the canvas at Wembley Stadium on 18 June 1963, one of the most famous moments in British boxing. Cooper won the British and Commonwealth heavyweight titles in 1959, also held the European crown, and remains the only British boxer to win three Lonsdale Belts outright. He was the first person to win BBC Sports Personality of the Year twice, was appointed OBE in 1969 and was knighted in 2000, the first and only British boxer to receive a knighthood.
