If your thoughts keep spinning long after you switch off the light, it can help to give your mind somewhere calm and cosy to go. Our YouTube sleep story The Secret Observatory at the Edge of the World takes you up a winding stone path through a twilight pine forest to a hidden mountain observatory, where the kettle is always warm and the fire never goes out.
Watch the sleep story
A warm story, not a science lesson
This is not a technical astronomy documentary. It is a gentle, character-driven story. You play a weary traveller guided by an old map that reads "Where the stars keep watch, the weary may rest." You are welcomed by Master Linus, the silver-haired Keeper, and Orion, an enormous ginger cat who purrs beside the hearth. Together you climb a spiral staircase lined with 300 years of star charts, stand beneath a glass dome full of the Milky Way and look through a brass telescope at nebulae, Saturn's rings and one mysterious golden star.
The comforting details, such as chamomile tea, birch logs, oak floorboards and wool blankets, give a busy mind something soft to rest on. The narration slowly softens into a whisper, then fades into night wind, hearth embers and gentle purring, so you can keep it playing all night. The whole video runs about three and a half hours.

Four tips for a calmer bedtime
- Choose cosy over clever. Simple, warm details give your attention a safe place to land, without plot twists to follow.
- Make the room dark and still. Turn the screen face down or off and let your ears do the work.
- Breathe slower than the story. Long, easy out-breaths help your body wind down.
- Let the ambience carry you. Keep the volume low and let the fire and wind sounds play on after the voice fades. Don't worry about hearing the ending.
