Do you lie awake replaying the day, the conversation that went wrong or tomorrow's to-do list? You are not alone, and you don't need a complicated routine to settle. This quick guide takes four calm ideas from our longer article, Spiritual Habits for Inner Peace: Small Daily Steps, and turns them into a simple wind-down you can try tonight.
Why the mind gets busy at night
An image found in Buddhist teaching compares the untrained mind to a monkey swinging from branch to branch, grabbing one thought and then the next. During the day there is plenty to keep it occupied. When the lights go off, it often starts swinging harder. The teaching is not that we should scold the monkey, but that we can gently give it somewhere to rest.
4 calm ways to quiet a busy mind before sleep
1. Notice the monkey mind
When you realise your thoughts are jumping around, simply notice it. There is no need to judge yourself or force the thoughts away. Seeing what the mind is doing is already a small step back from it.
2. Give it a place to rest
The simplest resting place is the breath. Breathe in slowly, notice the air entering, then breathe out a little longer than you breathed in. You have not emptied your mind, and you don't need to. You have simply come back to the present moment.
3. Ask one question
When a worry keeps returning, ask: is there something I can do about this right now? If yes, note one small step for the morning. If no, acknowledge the feeling, breathe, and let it rest for now. Letting go is not giving up. It is setting down a weight you were never meant to carry all night.
4. End with three good things
Before sleep, name three small things from today that you are thankful for. Keep them specific and ordinary: a warm cup of tea, a friend's message, light falling across a room. Over time, the mind starts finding these things on its own.
Start with just one
You don't need all four. Pick the one that feels easiest, try it tonight, and keep it for a week. Small habits, repeated, quietly change how the evening feels.
